How do I get my family to believe I am really unwell?
When your results come back normal, the people close to you may find it hard to believe you still feel unwell. Both can be true, and it helps when they understand why.
Share a page written for them
The page Normal results, and still unwell: both can be true is written to be forwarded. It explains, calmly and without blame, what a normal result tells you and what it does not.
Describe what you notice, not what you fear
Short, concrete descriptions are easier for family to hear: what has changed, since when, and what you can no longer do the way you used to. A few dates and examples say more than a long explanation.
Bring someone to an appointment
Some people find it helps when a family member comes along and hears the doctor first-hand. It lets them see that your experience is being taken seriously.
Keep your doctors in the picture
Feeling understood at home goes best alongside continuing to see the doctors who treat you, and keeping any prescribed treatment unless that doctor changes it.
My concern is not with the diagnosis itself, and I'm not trying to dismiss or challenge a legitimate medical diagnosis.
